We’re committed to animal welfare, and openness around our use of animals in research

AbacusBio is a signatory to the Openness Agreement on Animal Research and Teaching in New Zealand. The Openness Agreement is a New Zealand initiative supported by the Australian & New Zealand Council for the Care of Animals in Research and Teaching
(ANZCCART NZ) and is consistent with international approaches in this area.

The five commitments of the Openness Agreement

Commitment 1: We will be clear about why and how we use animals in research and teaching.

Commitment 2: We will enhance our communications with the media and the public about our use of animals in research and teaching.

Commitment 3: We will enhance our communications with tangata whenua about our use of animals in research and teaching.

Commitment 4: We will be proactive in providing opportunities for the public to find out about research and teaching using animals.

Commitment 5: We will report on progress annually and share our experiences.


AbacusBio’s Animal Use Statistics

AbacusBio carries out research projects for our clients, which sometimes involves collecting measurements on animals. All our animal research programmes are approved by the AgResearch Animal Ethics Committee. We are committed to openness around our use of animals in research. As such, we make publicly available the numbers of animals we use and the grade of the research activities on these animals.
