Jo Kerslake

Jo brings a ‘can do’ positive attitude to the AbacusBio team. She is an integrative thinker
with a passion for farming and applied agricultural research.
Jo's specialist areas include:
- lamb survival
- pregnancy and newborn physiology
- on-farm applied research
- epidemiology
Originally from a sheep and crop farm in Winton, Southland, Jo attended Massey University and completed a
BSc in Biochemistry and Genetics and a Master of Veterinary Studies in Epidemiology. After completing her
Masters, Joanne worked as a Research Associate on the Ovita Lamb Survival Project at AgResearch’s Invermay
campus. Jo has recently completed
her PhD in Animal Science. Jo’s PhD
investigated ways to improve multiple lamb survival for New Zealand sheep farmers. This research focussed on
quantifying physical and physiological differences between twin- and triplet-born lambs and the effects of
mineral and concentrates supplements on triplet-lamb birth weight and development.
Jo joined AbacusBio in February 2009 to help farmers improve the efficiency and profitability of their
agricultural systems. At AbacusBio, she will be working on agricultural carbon emissions, Abacus
Accelerator and on-farm trials in the farm consultancy area.
I n 2007,
she received a number of travel awards, including the United States Department of Agriculture and Nutritional
Research award, to travel to the Aspen Perinatal Biology Symposium, which was followed by travel to a number
of agricultural research institutes in the UK and Ireland.
Outside of work Jo enjoys playing ultimate frisbee, making furniture out of recycled timber, tramping around
New Zealand, water skiing and fishing in the beautiful Marlborough Sounds.
