Peter Amer

Peter brings innovation, problem solving, strategy development and analytical skills to the
AbacusBio team in the areas of animal breeding, statistical, genetic and economic analysis.
Peter’s specialty areas include:
- strategy and implementation of sheep, beef, dairy, deer and aquaculture genetics
- statistical, genetic and economic analysis of breeding strategies
- development of multi-trait economic selection indexes
- breeding value prediction
- mate selection and allocation
- maximizing genetic gain and minimizing inbreeding
- strategies for, and economic benefits of using genomic technologies in livestock breeding programs
Peter completed a BAgSci (Hons) at Lincoln College and subsequently a PhD involving economic analysis of cattle
genotypes at the University of Guelph in Canada. Peter then took up a post-doctoral fellowship at the Swiss Federal
Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland. Here he continued work in cattle genetics, researching economic
aspects of dual cattle production. Subsequently, he researched economic selection indexes in beef cattle breeding
as a post-doctoral fellow at the Scottish Agricultural College before taking a job as a scientist at AgResearch,
Invermay. His primary role at AgResearch was in the economic evaluation of major genes and breeding strategies to
incorporate them. He also developed industry genetic improvement initiatives for farmed deer.
In 2001 Peter joined AbacusBio Ltd and since that time the company has grown into a multi-disciplinary team with
Peter focusing his strengths on providing clients with sound statistical, genetic and economic analysis of breeding
programs. He is also involved in the application of genetics, particularly tactical manipulation of breeding scheme
designs for commercial breeding programmes (sheep, beef, dairy, deer and aquaculture), in a wide range of farmed
species both within New Zealand and internationally.
Peter remains closely involved in beef, sheep and dairy breeding developments in the UK and has major input into
developments in the New Zealand sheep industry, including research into development, delivery and commercialisation
of novel genetic technologies. He has an ongoing role as a consultant to the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation,
with significant input into their development of economic indexes for beef, dairy cattle and more recently sheep.
This has included a key involvement in industry stakeholder meetings involving large groups of farmers, meat
processors, as well as government and industry representatives. Together with partners in Brazil, Peter has
developed a performance recording and genetic evaluation system for sheep breeders in South America.
It is this innovation and ability to deal with complex issues that Peter applies so well in a multitude of
disciplines to help you exploit state of the art technologies in practical and commercial livestock breeding
programmes at either national, corporate or farm level.
