QT Agribusiness Symposium

Hosted by AbacusBio, the Queenstown Agribusiness Symposium (QAS) is an executive development initiative designed to push the boundaries of agribusiness in New Zealand.

The Symposium uses a case study approach to equip attendees with powerful practical tools and foster the aspiration and mind sets – required to actively grow their agribusiness, while also providing opportunities to create strong industry networks.

Held for the first time in 2013, the facilitators – Mary Shelman from Harvard Business School and Professor Damien McLoughlin from University College Dublin – led an inspirational series of case discussions over the three day course.

Shelman and McLoughlin emphasized the ‘tremendous opportunities’ available for New Zealand agribusiness internationally but highlighted the importance of capturing supply chain integrity to add value to NZ products.

The strength of country-to-country relationships – both government and business – emerged as a critical growth factor.

NZ-style supply chain systems in South America and China were identified as real possibilities.

The case study approach gave attendees insight into the opportunities, risks, strategic decisions, and governance facing the international agribusinesses showcased – such as New Zealand King Salmon.

AbacusBio continues to be delighted by the energy, engagement, and insights demonstrated by the attendees and thanks AGMARDT for their continued sponsorship of the event.

Reflections on the 2015 event

I would urge every senior manager and executive within the NZ agribusiness sector to make and take the time to attend NZ’s very own agribusiness symposium. The process of Harvard Business School case-study reading, followed by hard-hitting structured group discussion yields multiple learnings - that are relevant to the challenges of all NZ agribusiness management.

- Adrian Campbell, Managing Director, Vetlife

Exceptional value in terms of time and money; will be back for the next one.

- Richard Mandeno, Manager, ASB AgriCapital

This was an excellent event and I will be recommending it to others. The case studies and discussions had clear applications to our business and those of our customers.
