Sharl has spent the last 11 years commercialising and fostering the adoption of genetic and genomic technology in New Zealand’s sheep and beef sectors. Working closely with a wide range of seed-stock breeders, Sharl brings a wealth of one-on-one farmer experience and commercial reality, helping them understand why and how to use DNA technology.
Focussing on the needs of farmers, Sharl will continue to use his data analysis, project management and strategic skills to ensure that technology is understood and used in appropriate ways, maximising a return on investment.
His focus within AbacusBio is:
- Breeding program review and restructuring
- Technology adoption and implementation
- Data analysis and database utilisation
- Facilitation and project management
"After learning of a genetics discussion that Sharl led at Vet Services Waipukurau, we asked Sharl to run something similar for our farmer clients around Dannevirke. The workshop was held to try and help farmers understand the impact that genetics can have on the performance of their sheep flock and to try and increase awareness of what control they have over the genetic selection of their flocks. The workshop taught farmers what tools are available to help them with their genetic selections and what to look for in these tools. The workshop was a success in terms of outcomes for farmers. It was delivered in a manner that allowed farmers to understand, without too much jargon. Post workshop information was also provided that followed up on information that was delivered on the day."
