Gemma re-joined AbacusBio in August 2013 after completing a PhD in sheep genetics through the University of Melbourne and AgResearch. Prior to this she had worked in animal genomics at AgResearch and also had a three month stint at the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation as a consultant geneticist, where she worked on the development of an operational sheep evaluation system before embarking on her PhD.
In her new role as a dairy genetics consultant, Gemma is working on the genetic analysis of once a day (OAD) milking in dairy cattle and breeding scheme design, targeting genetic improvement of OAD milking.
Her focus within AbacusBio is:
- Animal breeding and genetics
- Variance component and breeding value estimation
- Data handling and analysis
