Franziska Weik recently moved to Dunedin in 2019 to commence a PhD programme with AbacusBio and Massey University on beef breeding cow performance.
Originally from Germany, Franziska has lived and worked on several sheep and beef farms in New Zealand before. Back in Germany she received her master’s degree in animal science, working on genomic analysis of maternal effects in dairy cattle. Driven by a strong interest in cattle breeding she eventually decided to embark on a PhD programme in New Zealand.
For her PhD studies, Franziska will work with a series of datasets to analyse and identify the most efficient cow type for New Zealand’s farming systems. New measurements will be investigated to predict lifetime performance and new traits are to be considered for selection.
